Our program is designed for students who are interested in entering the field of mental health counseling, and for those already in the field that are looking to advance their career. Our MHC program prepares students for the NYS licensure exam, while Canadian students who graduate from this program are eligible for Canadian Counselor Certification. Our flexible and convenient program format requires class attendance just one weekend a month. Our students receive hands on experience by completing 700 hours of clinical work. Our program will provide you with:

  • advanced, research-based knowledge in the areas of group and individual counseling, counseling techniques and assessment and diagnosis
  • full understanding of the professional and ethical issues relevant to mental health counseling and consultation
  • comprehensive understanding of multicultural and career issues in counseling

The work of our faculty can be found in numerous scholarly publications, which speaks to their extensive experience in the practice of mental health counseling. Medaille's faculty hold doctorates in psychology, counseling psychology, counselor education and clinical psychology. Our faculty are practitioners who bring real-world experiences to their students, creating engaging and supportive learning environments.

Location and Schedule

The Mental Health Counseling Program is offered at the Amherst Campus and, as of fall 2010, at the Rochester Campus, with a schedule that runs one weekend a month on Friday night, Saturday and Sunday.

Format

The MHC program is cohorted, which means that you will move through the program with the same small group of classmates. This innovative method of instruction provides a strong bond between students, and creates a built-in support system.
